On Saturday, 19th January, Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) will conduct
a protest demanding the Mens Welfare ministry .This will be joined by people from all walks of life including Software engineers, doctors, drivers and plumbers. Azim Premji, CEO of Wipro, who faced a false and frivolous Domestic violence case by wife of an employee of Wipro, has also been invited to the protest.
The location of the Protest will be in front of Gandhi Statue, on MG Road and the time of the protest is from 10:30am till 1:00pm. About 150 to 200 men, women, elders and children are expected to participate in the protest. There are 30 to 40 men and women traveling from Hyderabad, Chennai and other parts of South India to participate in this protest. Most of them are scientists, NRIs, Software Engineers, Doctors, Business persons. The protests will be held every month in different parts of India till Indian parliament amends the laws to "stop legal terrorism" and makes all the laws "gender neutral".
Today, men are facing a lot issues due to lack of protection to men according to law from extortion, dowry harassment (of men), domestic violence and economic abuse. According to National Crime Records Bureau, in every 10 minutes a husband is committing suicide in India.
The current Domestic Violence act was drafted by lawyers, whose expertise on 1st principle of law making and justice can be shown to be questionable. Some of their key members are unable to understand that words police, bail, jail, bonds have no place in DV act which is supposed to be civil law. The current Domestic violence Act suffers from too many maladies including the fact that the definition is wrong, procedures are wrong and the relief is wrong. There have been instances where in violent and abusive women have got their way. The law is used grab the property and wealth created by Elderly People out of their retirement funds. This has removed the peaceful residency rights elderly people and unleashed "legal violence" on elderly. The Supreme Court of India has termed the DV Act as a badly drafted law which can lead to "social chaos".
That the Dowry law and Section 498a of IPC are being heavily misused is no longer in question. The judges have spoken. Justice Malimath Committee has already recommended the law to be made bailable. Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice Seema of Supreme Court have already spoken in anguish about it and termed the misuse of Section 498a as "legal Terrorism". They also urged the legislature/parliament to make provisions to stop the misuse of the Law. The Indian parliament has ignored this judgment for last 2 years.
The judgments denouncing the legal terrorism are too numerous. Considering families as "guilty till proven innocent" is against the cardinal principles of natural justice.
The impact of the legal terrorism is enormous:
- In every 6 minutes an innocent is arrested.
- In every 30 minutes an innocent women is arrested.
- In every 2 hours an innocent elderly is arrested
- In every day an innocent child is arrested
Source: National Crime Records Bureau 2005
Thousands of men are forcibly separated from own their children if they have any differences with wives. Thousands of children today are living as fatherless children as they are forcibly disconnected from their fathers. As a result, the suicide rate of Indian Men is increasing at a rapid rate. At present, about 73000 men commit suicide out of 113,000 over all suicides in India. The Married men's suicide is extremely high (52454 suicides) and at least 24000 married men commit suicide due to abuse by wives, which is three times the so called dowry deaths ( source : National Crime Bureau )
Today, men are often portrayed negatively by citing exaggerated statistics on dowry or domestic violence. For example, every un-natural or accident death is classified as "dowry death" and this statistics is used to blow up the "dowry death" data by several times. In Karnataka per year conviction of "dowry deaths" is at most 30 (refer Times of India Article). Even these murders are mostly spousal murders with no dowry angle involved.
The contribution and sacrifices that men make to society with commitment and shear hard work is often neglected. Slapping Men by women is considered a fashion and is encouraged in TV commercials, TV Serials and in Movies, where as if a man slaps a woman then it is considered as worst form of domestic assault and a hue and cry is raised. It has become a fashion to abuse men and to portray them in bad light.
Save Indian Family Foundation also demands a commission for Men's Issues. When there can be commissions and ministries for women, children, minorities and even Animals, why there can not be a Men's Welfare Ministry and National Commission for Men (NCM)? After all, it is the Men who work in most hazardous and difficult environments like working as a Coolie, a rickshaw puller, a fire fighter or garbage cleaner. In every 10 minutes a married man commits suicide in India.
Demands by Save Indian Family Foundation:
- Right to protection of Men from abuse and dowry harassment by Indian Legal System.
- Dowry, Extortion and Domestic Violence Laws must be made gender neutral.
- Redraft the Domestic violence law.
- Presumptive Joint Child Custody of children.
- Punishment to unscrupulous women, who threaten, abuse and file false dowry harassment cases.
- All laws & bills including the newly placed harassment bills to be made gender neutral. The words men and women need to be replaced by "persons" and the words wife and husband need to be replaced with the word "spouse".
- Spread awareness of the abuse of men and misuse of laws amongst authorities.
- Gender neutrality training ( as opposed to biased gender sensitivity training ) to all authorities, police and judiciary.
- Include help booths to help abused men to be run by NGOs in the Police Commissioner's offices.
And the demands are just too many….
This necessitates that Government appoint a Men's Welfare Ministry immediately to look into the issues holistically and provide relief on all of to all citizens irrespective of gender.
On 19th January, SIFF NGO activists from various cities of India will conduct a
massive protest in front of Gandhi Statue, on MG Road Bangalore.
BANGALORE, Jan. 18: Has the time come for the government to have a ministry exclusively for men's welfare or, for that matter, a national commission for men's affairs?
It would seem so, going by the Save Indian Family Foundation, whose membership runs into thousands, comprising largely of software professionals from all over India. Troubled, abused and harassed under Section 498a of the Indian Penal Code, these professionals have united against what they say is the jailing of innocent elders, children, women and men under the Dowry Act.
It is to press for their demand for a ministry, along with a national commission for men's affairs, that the SIFF has organised a protest in the city tomorrow. Supporting the foundation are thousands of members who are joining the protest, including software engineers, doctors, drivers, plumbers, scientists and even NRIs and businessmen from Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and other parts of the country.
The SIFF has invited Mr Azim Premji, Wipro chief, whose company was dragged into a domestic violence case by the wife of an employee. The organisers propose to carry on the protest every month in different parts of the country, to force Parliament to amend the laws to stop legal terrorism and make all the laws gender neutral, according to Mr Pandurang Khatti, one of the SIFF founders and a leading software professional. He said men were facing a host of issues owing to lack of protection from the law, including extortion, dowry harassment, domestic violence and economic abuse.
Quoting the National Crime Records Bureau, he said every 10 minutes, a married man was committing suicide in the country.
The current Domestic Violence Act, for example, suffered from too many maladies, including the definition which itself was wrong, goes his argument. Even the procedures were wrong as was the relief. There were many instances where violent and abusive women had got their way. The law was used to grab the property and wealth created by elderly people out of their retirement funds.
This had removed the peaceful residency rights of the elderly people, unleashing legal violence on them. Even the Supreme Court, he said, had termed the Domestic Violence Act a badly drafted law which could lead to social chaos. Even the Justice Malimath Committee recommended that the Dowry Act and Section 498a of IPC be made bailable. Mr Justice Arijit Pasayat and Mr Justice Seema of the Supreme Court had spoken in anguish, terming the misuse of Section 498a of IPC as legal terrorism.
The SIFF organiser said the judges even urged the legislature or Parliament to make provisions for stopping the misuse of the law.
The impact of legal terrorism, he added, was huge more so when every six minutes an innocent man was arrested, every 30 minutes an innocent woman was arrested; every two hours an innocent elderly was arrested and every day an innocent child was arrested.
Quoting from the National Crime Records Bureau, 2005, he said men in their thousands were forcibly separated from their children if they had any differences with their wives. As a result, the suicide rate of Indian men was increasing. Suicides by married men, he said, were high with 24,000 doing so following abuse by their wives ~ three times the number of socalled dowry deaths. Men were portrayed negatively.
BANGALORE: The tables have turned. Husbands harassed by their wives have finally realised the futility of taking things lying down.
Beginning with Bangalore on Saturday, they are taking to the streets under the banner of Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF).
The largest group in India, SIFF was formed in 2000 and has 8,000 members who have been accused of harassing their wives and have been slapped with cases under Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and anti-dowry law (of 498a). According to the group, the Act is being misused by their wives and in-laws.
The group, comprising mainly software engineers, is urging the central government to
make the Act neutral by including in its ambit provisions related to domestic violence against men. The members are holding protests in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata for this purpose.
Over 200 members gathered in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue near Cubbon Park in Bangalore on Saturday. Armed with placards espousing their cause, they made motivating speeches and narrated to passers-by their plight.
"Men are being portrayed negatively by exaggerated statistics on dowry harassment or domestic violence cases. Women often use the Act to separate from the husbands in lieu of an attractive alimony," said Binoe, a SIFF member.
According to Pandurang Katti, one of the 12 SIFF founders and a senior software professional, men face a host of issues due to lack of protection from the law.
"The current Domestic Violence Act suffers from gender bias as it is only made for protection of women," he said.
Uma Challa, director of the US-based Protect Indian Family Foundation which has opened a branch in Hyderabad, said:
"Women call me up just to ask if they can use the Act to bring around their husbands or to separate them from their parents. They do not understand the seriousness of the law. This is predominantly an urban phenomenon," she said.
"We have websites and helplines that reach out to only internet-savvy people. But we want to create awareness among those who do not have access to the net," she added.
Bangalore, Jan 20 (ANI): Victims of misuse of anti-dowry law and Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), held a protest demonstration here today, and demanded the setting up of the Welfare Ministry for mens.
Members of the Save Indian Family Foundation held the demonstration at the M G Road in front of Mahatma Gandhis statue.
They held placards and demanded redrafting of domestic violence laws and making gender issues neutral. They also demanded a commission to address men's issues.
"Its not just men, but also women of their family, who are victim of the misuse of anti-dowry laws. In every 10 minutes a husband commits suicide in India, but why that is not considered as domestic violence?" asked Uma Challa, a non resident Indian. (ANI)
