Press Release: International Men’s Day – 19 November, 2007

This year, for the first time in history, India will be observing November 19th as

International Men’s Day, under the auspices of Save Family Foundation and its

sibling organizations.

On this momentous occasion, Save Family Foundation urges the citizens of India to recognize the valuable contributions by men to our families, economy and society, the simultaneous diminution in value of men’s lives, the blatant violation of men’s rights, the ceaseless propagation of anti-male sentiments by “radical groups” and the growing apathy of the government and society towards the sufferings of men.

While men still perform some of the most risky and challenging jobs in the society and while the Government of India collects 82% of its tax revenue from men, not a single rupee has been allocated in the name of men’s welfare in the country’s budget in the last 60 years.

It is also important to note that according to the Labor and Employment Ministry, during the years 2001-05, men employed in the public and private sectors lost 14,00,000 jobs, while women gained 1,00,000 jobs during the same period.

While an increasing number of men are losing employment, more women are entering the job market and defying their traditional roles within the family and the society. Nevertheless, the society is refusing to free men of their traditional duties of protecting and providing for women, children and the aged.

In addition, men are being subjected to severe discrimination under law and their basic human rights are being violated every day in the name of more and more legal provisions that claim to empower and protect women.

Thousands of men are becoming victims of “legal terrorism” unleashed by the misuse of Indian Penal Code Section 498A, Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act, adultery laws, laws against rape and sexual harassment, and even divorce, maintenance and child custody laws.

To make things worse, even family members of men, including senior citizens, children and women, regardless of their age, health or marital status, are arrested based on unsubstantiated allegations of dowry harassment and domestic abuse, and subjected to long-drawn trials.

The growing disregard and hatred against men in our society is forcing many Indian men to end their lives. According to the National Crime Bureau, the number of suicides by males in every age group studied outweighs the number of suicides by females, in the recent years. In the year 2005 alone, nearly twice as many married men (52,483), compared to married women (28,186), committed suicide, unable to withstand verbal, emotional, economic and physical abuse and legal harassment.

On the occasion of International Men’s Day 2007, Save Family Foundation and related organizations demand the Government of India to:

  • Establish a “Ministry for Men’s Welfare” to cater to men’s needs in the changing society.
  • End the "legal terrorism" perpetrated through the misuse of anti-male, anti-family laws.
  • Make civil and criminal laws gender-neutral.
  • Pass directives to resolve all marital disputes under civil law.
  • Make provisions to punish those who abuse the judicial process irrespective of gender.
  • Confer protection upon men against verbal, emotional, economic, physical and sexual abuse at home and in the work place.
  • Grant joint child custody to both spouses upon dissolution of marriage.
  • Amend Article 51A(e) of the Constitution of India as follows:
It shall be the duty of every citizen of India—
    (e) to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst
all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities; to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women AND men (as opposed to just women).

GENDER EQUALITY:

Our work is guided by the premise that the promotion of gender equality is both a means for development and an end for the enjoyment of human rights by women and men

However, the University of Virginia professor, Hetherington, also states that 70% of children coming from divorced families consider divorce an adequate answer to marital problems (even if children are present), compared to only 30% of children from non-divorced families.

Even an Animal has a Ministry and Welfare Division

Why not Men?

We need a men’s ministry

We need a law for protection of men.

PRESS CONFERENCE DONE BY SAVE INDIAN FAMILY FOUNDATION,
BANGALORE, ON 16TH NOVE'07
November 19 is International Men's Day (IMD). International Men’s Day is celebrated in the world since 1999. This year, Members of Save Indian Family Foundation, a Men’s Rights Organisation in India have campaigned for discussion on Men’s Issues on this day. Many of the members of SIFF have faced false dowry cases, extortion of lacs of rupees, threats and legal terrorism.
Seminars and Protests against denial of basic human rights of men in India are planned in various cities on November 19th. Today, many young men in India are
scared of marriage and are reluctant to marry due to arrests of lacs of innocent people every year under false dowry cases. This indirectly amounts to denial of basic rights of men as men have no hope of any protection from abuse under existing Indian laws. Thousands of men are forcibly separated from own their children if they have any differences with wives. Thousands of children today are living as fatherless children as they are forcibly disconnected from their fathers. As a result, the suicide rate of Indian Men is increasing at a rapid rate.
At present, about 73000 men commit suicide out of 113,000 over all suicides in India.  Today, men are often portrayed negatively by citing exaggerated statistics on dowry or domestic violence. The contribution and sacrifices that men make to society with commitment and shear hard work is often neglected.
Slapping Men by women is considered a fashion and is encouraged  in TV commercials, TV Serials and in Movies where as if a man slaps a woman then it is considered as worst form of domestic violence and a hue and cry is raised. Save Indian Family Foundation also demands a commission for Men’s Issues.
When there can be commissions and ministries for women, children, minorities and even Animals, why there can not be a Men’s Welfare Ministry and National Commission for Men (NCM)? After all, it is the Men who work in most hazardous and difficult environments like working as a Coolie, a rickshaw puller, a fire fighter or garbage cleaner. In every 8 minutes a man commits suicide in India.
SIFF members ask,” Are not men paying taxes? If yes, then why there is no funding for study or surveys on domestic violence on Men? Why no complaints of abuse of men by their wives are allowed to be filed?”IMD is all about men getting in touch with their emotions, their inner self and the contributions they make towards family, society, country and the world often sacrificing their own self interests and even their lives. On Monday 19th November, many managers in software companies in Bangalore have decided to give the team members Multiplex tickets for the evening.
Demands by Save Indian Family Foundation on eve of Intl Men’s Day:
  1. Right to protection of Men by Indian Legal System.
  2. Dowry, Extortion and Domestic Violence Laws must be made gender neutral.
  3. Join Child Custody for Men. That is men get to take care of their children for 50% of the year.
  4. Punishment to unscrupulous women, who threaten, abuse and file false dowry harassment cases.
  5. Creation of Ministry for Men’s Welfare in line with Ministry for Women and Children.
  6. Immediate Creation of National Commission for Men.
Men’s Rights activists of Bangalore will assemble in Cubbon Park in front of
Press Club, Bangalore on Saturday 17th November to initiate campaigns for
International Men’s Day. Please note: "Not Every Day is a MAN's day".
Only patriarchal people, who believe that women have no role in a society, think that everyday is a man's day and women need to be contained in a single day "8th March". Terming 364 days in a year as men's days and only 8th March as women's day is chauvinistic and derogatory to women. Hence, for the sake of gender equality, Nov 19th is celebrated as IMD. Incidentally, 19th November is also birthday of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
